Mindfulness Techniques for Better Climbing Performance
Keep composed above gear.
Have you reached a plateau in your climbing?
Do you feel that something is holding you back?
As a trained mindfulness teacher (Accredited by Mindfulness UK) I have developed two new courses to integrate mindfulness techniques into your climbing.
The short course is a 3.5 hour face-to-face seminar combining an introduction to practical mindfulness and compassion-based techniques with bouldering challenges, so that you can start to apply mindfulness practices to help you maintain and/or regain composure during climbing.
This course is suitable for all abilities and climbing styles and costs £70 per person.
The longer 6 session (13 hour) course allows us to delve deeper into mindfulness techniques and how to apply them in both climbing and everyday life. It is a combination of face to face theory sessions and practical climbing session (roped or boulder). These sessions can be timed to work for you but usually take 8 weeks to cover, giving you time to practice the techniques between each session.
This course is suitable for all abilities and cost £400
Article ‘Helpful and Unhelpful Fear in Climbing’
Dr Kris Chapman and myself have recently co-authored an article in Climber Magazine (July-August 2021) edition on ‘Helpful and Unhelpful fear in climbing’. These courses elaborate on this theme, examining how being in the present (i.e. mindful) and being less self-critical (i.e. self-compassionate) can help you:
manage and reduce pressures such as fear and performance anxiety
regain composure when you feel overwhelmed
get over mistakes more quickly, and
have an increased adaptability to your environment and your own condition
